Southeast Portland Transportation

The award winning mass transit system in Portland, which includes buses and the MAX, an urban light rail line, as well as a downtown transit mall and Fareless Square, the downtown free-ride zone, is one of the most extensive and advanced in the U.S. Tabor buses stop in front of Portland Campus every 15 minutes.

Recreation

Just a short drive takes you to the spectacular Columbia Gorge and Multnomah Falls, windsurfing at Hood River,  and majestic Mt. Hood, (the tallest mountain in Oregon), wine tasting tours at valley wineries, fish watching at Bonneville Dam, and all of the excitement of the Oregon coast.

Known for its extensive system of more than 200 parks, Portland, built on a European model, features statues, fountains and half sized city blocks, was voted by Walking Magazine as "one of America's best walking towns" and is truly a walker's paradise. Downtown  walking tours take residents and visitors to Portland's  best art, architecture, urban parks and fountains Washington Park, home of the Rose Test Gardens, (the oldest public garden of its kind in the country containing 8,000 rose plantings of 550 varieties), invites Portland Walkers,  joggers and rollerbladers, and picnickers,  who also enjoy the trails at Tom McCall Waterfront Park with its lawns, outdoor cafes, river walks and marinas. watch the dancing waters at Salmon Street Springs fountain, Portland is home to the highest number of cyclists per capita in the U.S. Bicycling magazine's No. 1 bicycling city in America due to Portland's many bike paths including those at Portland's biggest park, (4,600 acres and 50 miles of trails for mountain biking trails just minutes from downtown). Forest Park, (which is the largest park within a city in the U.S) and South Park Blocks in the downtown area which is canopied with elm trees. The name "FitTown, U.S.A." was given to Portland by Fit magazine. Runners participate in the annual Portland Marathon and the 150-mile Hood-to-Coast relay race.

Portland's many environments and close proximity to a wide variety of recreational opportunities, from arctic to desert to the beauty of unmatched Pacific Ocean vistas, provide residents with the best of every sport imaginable, from windsurfing in the city of Hood River, (located 50 miles east of Portland known as "the wind surfing capital of the U.S"), to camping, hiking, river rafting, biking, wind surfing, and kite flying fishing, or snow skiing, at Mt. Hood National Forest is just an hour away to the east of Portland. Other recreation abound, including, water-skiing, sailing, boating, rock climbing, golf, tennis, and just about anything else you can imagine.

You don't need a home in Aspen in you own a home in Portland, snow skiing in July is even possible at nearby Timberline Lodge, offering the only summer skiing in America with lifts operating. The U.S. ski team practices for winter competition during the summer months at this facility.

Climate

Portland's mild climate with high temperatures in the summer rarely over 80 and winter temperatures rarely below 40 allow year-round skiing. Portland itself enjoys mild winters and spectacular summers. With average yearly rainfall of 37 inches, you may have heard about how much it rains in the Pacific Northwest, Portland's average is below that areas in the region.

Southeast Portland History

Portland's history begins with covered wagons, pioneers and fur trappers in the rugged Cascade Mountain Range with beautiful green forests, roaring of wild rivers and the Oregon Trail.

The Lewis and Clark  expedition entered this wild country in 1806. Twenty years later, the Columbia River had become the primary shipping lane of the Hudson's Bay Company. British tall sailing vessels exchanging shiploads of much needed supplies for lush furs.

The city of Portland, founded in 1851 was part of a 640 acre land claim owned by a Massachusetts native Asa Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove. Portland was named on the decision of a the toss of a coin since Lovejoy was set on the name Boston for the settlement and Pettygrove who was from Maine and wanted to name the it Portland.
